What if the food you eat every day is the reason you don’t feel like yourself anymore?

Let me start with something that might feel uncomfortable…

We live longer than any generation before us. And yet chronic disease, chronic fatigue, digestive issues, or autoimmune conditions are more common today than ever. We have more access to healthcare, more supplements on the shelves, more wellness content (than we should probably read in a lifetime) and somehow, more people than ever feel unwell in their daily lives.

We are living longer, but sicker.

Something is not adding up…

Are you familiar with bloating, food sensitivities, brain fog, anxiety, cravings, sleep issues… Or maybe you have a chronic or autoimmune disease?

Then let me ask you : what if food isn’t just fuel, but the foundation of your health ? What if the everyday choices you make at the store, in your kitchen, on your plate, are shaping your future?

The single most powerful tool we have to improve our health is something so basic, that we have almost forgotten how important it is. What we eat. Every single day.

The key that can’t turn

Imagine a key and a lock.

The lock represents the enzymes in your body, the biological mechanisms responsible for every function that keeps you alive and well. (Digestion, energy production, hormone synthesis. Immune regulation, detoxification…)

Now, a key only works when every single one of its dents and edges is perfectly shaped. One is missing and the lock will not turn, no matter how many times you try.

Your micronutrients (the vitamins, minerals that come from real, whole food) are what shapes those keys. They are the cofactors that allow your enzymes to function. Each one is necessary. Each one has a specific role, and when it is missing, the key cannot turn.

When your diet is built primarily on ultra-processed foods, depleted of fibre and micronutrients, engineered for profit and convenience rather than nourishment… your keys are not complete. And your body cannot function the way it was designed to.

Coming back to whole food

The shift I encourage YOU to start today, is a gradual, sustainable return to real food. More whole, less processed. More nourishment, less on the ingredients list.

The body responds faster than most people expect. Here is what whole food actually gives you that packaged food can’t:

Vegetables and fruit are your multivitamin in natural form. The real source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients. Diversity matters as much as quantity. Different colours, raw or cooked. Every variety feeds a different set of bacteria in your gut and fills a different shape in your key. The aim to fill half of your plate with vegetables.

Quality proteins are the structural foundation of your body. Not just for muscle but for enzymes themselves, for your brain, for your immune system, for your gut lining, for your hormones… Every cell in your body requires proteins to repair and regenerate. Without adequate protein, the body cannot build the very locks it needs the keys for, and MOST of us do not eat enough proteins every day. The aim for a protein source at every meal, from breakfast to dinner.

Healthy fats: olive oil, coconut, avocado, oily fish, nuts, seeds, ghee… They are essential for brain function, to build your hormones, for every cell membrane in your body, and for the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. The marketing causing the fear of fat has done profound damage, especially for women’s health. Fat is not the enemy. Refined seed oils and trans fats are. The aim to eat oily fish like sardines or mackerel every week to support your natural Omega-3 balance and lower inflammation.

And here’s what whole food protects you from: chemicals, artificial dyes, loads of sugar and syrup, oxidized oils, preservatives… All things you would never eat individually, making inflammation rise and your body age faster.

Together (vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats from whole foods) form an anti-inflammatory plate that gives your body the full set of keys it needs to function optimally.

Ok, but where do I start ?

You do not need to change everything at once. You need to shift the ratio: a little more real, a little less processed, repeated over weeks until it becomes your normal.

Make the whole food section of your grocery store your new favorite hang out spot. The best choices are the foods that do not have any ingredient list! Because they are Whole Foods. All your vegetables, your fruits… They should be the base of your diet, and the most of your shopping cart. The only aisle where you are allowed to grab whatever you want and as much as you want! Add to this dry products like nuts, seeds, rice, quinoa…

Eat your colours. If your plate is not full of colors, it is missing micronutrients. Colour in food is not decoration, each pigment represents a different family of nutrients with different roles in keeping your body well. Incredible, right?

Read labels. The ingredients list tells you more than any health marketing on the front of the packaging (never trust those!). Easy trick : If you cannot recognise or pronounce what is listed, it probably shouldn’t be in your body. The ingredients are always listed in descending order, meaning the first listed in the most present ingredient in that food, and so on… You see sugar or syrup in the top 3? Put it back. The shorter the list, the better.

Watch out for marketing traps. Low-fat products, protein bars, plant-based alternatives, “healthy” cereals, gluten free… NONE of those mentions mean HEALTHY. Many of these ultra-processed foods are just wearing a wellness costume to fool you. And you’re not a fool! You can spot them. They are often high in sugar, seed oils, additives, and synthetic ingredients while being low in the nutrients your body needs. Don’t trust the front of the packaging, read the labels.

The bigger picture

In Chinese Medicine, the body is understood as a Whole. Nothing happens in isolation, and true health is a balance between all systems. In Functional Nutrition, my approach is very similar. We do not chase individual symptoms. We look at the whole picture (the gut, inflammation, nutrient status, stress load, sleep) and we work on the foundations that allow everything else to regulate itself.

The foundations start with food. It is the signal you send your body multiple times every day. And over months and years, those signals compound either into health, or symptoms and diseases.

Your body is just waiting for the right keys.
